One of the vital tools derived from the study of history, and from the study of history alone, is an ability to conceptualize in dates and details the pace and impetus of change within our societies.
It is through this grasping of time and change, and the slow process of reaching the present day, that we come to understand not just where we are in the grand scheme of space and time, but who we are, how we got here, and what we might be able to do with the opportunities we have — opportunities offering the privilege of making the most significant of determinations: the opportunity to preserve or reclaim worthwhile traditions and to direct the course of what will inevitably become the next chapter of studied history.
