The general defense for ‘entitlements’ like Social Security and Medicare is quite similar to the historical defense for slavery. In each case, it goes something like this:
“I paid for (or into) it. It’s my property. The mechanisms in place treated it as property, and I expect it to remain mine even in betrayal of my better judgment; even after acknowledging that it will require the continued suspension of self-ownership and the continuation of a coercive relationship between me and the laborers who sustain the institution.”
