The purpose of dating is to find a suitable partner for marriage; the purpose of marriage is to have children and raise a family; and the purpose of having children and raising a family is in the transmission of culture, values, and ultimately wisdom — a process complicated and made confusing where there is either no defined cultural identity or cultural leadership in the family, a lack of shared culture or shared values, or any clash of cultures or values between spouses coming from distinctly different groups, customs, or belief systems.
To the extent that any decision within this process undermines or dilutes the culture and the values — assuming they are worth transmitting — it is a case of abject failure, and indeed a betrayal of our ancestors who each, for countless generations, labored tirelessly to preserve the culture and the traditions that we, if we are not careful, risk taking for granted and relinquishing in an instant.
After all that has been poured into the culture, after all that precedes us in the blood, sweat, and tears shed by our ancestors, it is still the case that the culture and the hard-won wisdom can survive only so long as we remember their sacrifices, honor the obligation we’ve inherited, and commit to transmitting the worthwhile values, virtues, and traditions that define our culture, guide us in wisdom, and make us who we are.
